Like so many of you, I work a 9-5 and know how difficult it can be to find time to take a vacation while juggling so many responsibilities. My solution? Weekend getaways and day trips. These convenient excursions are a lifesaver when you’re craving a change of scenery but want to stay on budget and/or close to home. Weekend getaways are also relatively easy to plan, and can even be planned last-minute.
Living in the Northeast U. S. definitely has its perks. I mean, who wouldn’t want NYC and Philly right in their backyard? Over the years, I’ve made more of an effort to discover these wonderful cities, and I’ve also stumbled upon some amazing places that weren’t even on my radar.
Ready to plan your next weekend getaway? I’ve put together a list of incredible cities in the Northeast that I think everyone should have on their list. Many of the locations on this list are very well-known, however, I’ve also included some places that I think deserve more exposure. Here are 8 destinations in the Northeast U.S. to inspire your next weekend getaway or day trip.
1. Philadelphia, PA
Philly is one of my absolute favorite cities for a day trip or weekend getaway. It’s just one of those places that I can always go back to and never get tired of. It’s known for amazing food (cheesesteaks, soft pretzels, and water ice, to name a few), as well as numerous historic sites and world-famous sports teams and concert venues. I’ve spent more weekends than I can count exploring this wonderful city. Whether you’re a local or visiting for the first time, you’ll always find something exciting to do here.
My top budget-friendly things to do in The City of Brotherly Love:
- Learn about the nation’s history at Independence Hall and see the famous liberty bell (fun fact: this is a UNESCO World Heritage Site)
- Enjoy lunch at LOVE park and get a photo with the iconic sign
- Stroll down historic Elfreth’s Alley, the nation’s oldest residential street (a great spot for Instagram photos)
- See the glorious art exhibits at the Philadelphia Museum of Art (the Arms & Armor exhibit is one of my faves. For now, you can explore the museum virtually)
- Visit the massive statue of the fictional movie character Rocky Balboa. It’s located at the bottom of the steps of the Philadelphia Art Museum, simply called the “Rocky steps” (Free and open daily)
- Go ice skating (winter season) or roller skating (summer season) at Blue Cross River Rink (skating admission – $4, skating rental – $10)
- Explore the quirky, colorful mosaicked galleries at Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens ($10 for adults, $8 for students)
2. Norfolk, VA
If you’re looking for a fun waterfront city for the perfect day trip, consider adding Norfolk to your list. It’s located within the Virginia Beach/Norfolk Newport News Metropolitan Area and is home to Naval Station Norfolk.
Norfolk has a chill, welcoming vibe that I really enjoyed. It has lots of history but also has a flourishing arts scene. It’s quickly becoming a cultural hub in the area, with many restaurants, museums, and shops. There’s a revival happening that I think will really put this city on the map. As you stroll around colorful, nautical Norfolk, also keep an eye out for mermaids 🙂
Attractions and restaurants to visit in Norfolk:
- Selden Market – a marketplace with pop-up shops, food, events and more. A collaborative, open space for small, up-and-coming businesses
- NEON District – The first official arts district. NEON stands for New Energy of Norfolk. Home to public art, entertainment, food & spirits, and more. Follow on Instagram for updates and events
- Hampton Roads Naval Museum – Naval Museum located downtown (free admission)
- Chrysler Museum of Art – located at the border of downtown and the Ghent district, this museum has 50 galleries with more than 30,000 objects (free admission and parking)
- O’s Donuts – made to order specialty donuts. Grab a tasty treat while you explore
- Granby Street Pizza – one of the most popular pizza places in Norfolk
3. Wilmington, DE
This is a city you don’t hear much about in terms of travel and tourism, but Wilmington is packed with some pleasant surprises.
Located only 30 minutes from Philadelphia, and 2 hours from NYC, it’s is easily accessible within the tri-state area.
There’s an abundance of restaurants, cultural attractions, and activities that will fill your itinerary. This is the perfect day trip spot because there’s so much to do both inside the city and in the surrounding Brandywine Valley.
One of my favorite things about Wilmington is the beautiful Riverfront where you can experience the sights and sounds of the city via the Delaware River Taxi. At only $7 for adults, it’s the perfect affordable activity for a weekend afternoon.

8. Cape Elizabeth, Maine
Cape Elizabeth is a dreamy coastal town near Portland, Maine. It’s known for its beautiful beaches, spectacular views, and iconic lighthouses. I strongly connected with Cape Elizabeth when I first visited a few years ago, and I will surely be returning. For some reason, I really like lighthouses so I was pretty excited to stumble upon this gorgeous town during my trip to Maine a few years ago.
One iconic site in Cape Elizabeth is the Portland Head Light – the most photographed lighthouse in America. Additionally, there are 4 other lighthouses in the area. One special feature of Cape Elizabeth is that the town can be easily explored by bike or on foot. Bring your camera, some picnic baskets, comfortable shoes, and get ready for a day of relaxing fun.
Portland Head Light
Here are some must-see places in Cape Elizabeth:
