Travel is exciting because it allows you to discover new things, and this discovery can begin right at home. Keep an open mind, and you’ll be surprised by how many gems you’ll find in your backyard.
Here are some ways to be a tourist in your home town.
1. Check out your hometown (or state’s) tourism website for events
Visit your state’s tourism website for cool happenings around town. Also, see if there is an Instagram account for cities and towns near you (ex: @visitphilly, @stufftodoinhouston, @discoveratlanta, etc). This is a great resource for exciting events and giveaways too.
2. Browse event websites for things happening near you
Check out sites like Eventbrite, Bandsintown, and Facebook Events for interesting events and activities nearby, like sporting events, concerts, and festivals. You can sign up for email notifications to be alerted when your favorite artists are coming to town, or relevant events are approaching. I purchased tickets to One Liberty Observation Deck through Groupon, which saved me some coins. During major holidays, there are sure to be lots of events happening near you.
Tip: Visit Groupon and Living Social for special discounts, and coupons on dining, travel, and events near you.
3. Take a staycation
Book a stay at a hotel in your area that you’ve never been to. Take an extended weekend to explore your home town with fresh eyes. This is also a great solution for full-time workers who would like to travel more often. Grab some pamphlets from the hotel lobby to see the top-rated attractions in your town. You may discover places you’ve never heard of!
4. Embrace your state’s history
Embrace a bit of history by visiting state parks, museums, and historical monuments in your town or capital city. Many museums offer free or discounted tours, which is an affordable way to see your home town and learn more about its history.
5. Get touristy
Visit the most touristy spots in your town and take some photos there (think downtown, famous statues, bridges, landmarks). Also, if your city offers bus tours, take advantage!
6. Take a new route
Lalor Street Park, Trenton, NJ
Switch up your routine and see your town in a completely different way by taking different routes once in awhile. There’s always something new to see, even in a place you’re already familiar with!
7. Ask for recommendations
Reach out to family and friends for their recommendations and favorite places to visit. More than likely, they’ve visited places you haven’t!
8. Document your travels
Keep a travel journal or blog about your local travels. Take lots of photos and document your experiences. You could become a local expert on the best restaurants, hotels, and events around town. Who knows, you may even become a source of recommendations for others!
What is your favorite thing about your hometown? Do you venture out and explore often? Let’s talk in the comments!
