Packing seems to be the most dreaded aspect of traveling, and I’ll admit- I don’t enjoy it either. Not only do you have to plan and create a checklist of essentials, but you also need to figure out a way to make everything fit into your luggage so your bag is comfortable enough to lug around and meets the airline weight requirements. Even so, packing for a trip doesn’t have to be stressful. With the right techniques and tricks, you’ll be a packing pro in no time. Want to learn how to pack lighter and more efficiently for your next trip? Keep reading below for my tips.
1. Check the weather
Firstly, check the weather of the location you’re headed to. This will help you coordinate your outfits appropriately. One year I went to Canada in August and made the mistake of packing only summer clothes, while the weather was still slightly chilly. In hindsight, I would’ve packed a pair of joggers and a light hoodie as well. Some weather patterns to be aware of are rainy seasons and dry seasons. Also be mindful of areas that are prone to hurricanes, wildfires, and typhoons. Looking for the best weather apps to use? There are some really great ones that give accurate updates to help make your trip more enjoyable.
Some of the best weather apps for travelers are:
- Weather Bug
- AccuWeather

2. Plan your outfits day-by-day before you leave
After you check the weather forecast, plan out the clothes you’ll need for each day as best you can. When packing, pair different items together to see what looks the best and only pack things you will actually wear. I know it can be tempting to bring more than we need but honestly most of the time we don’t end up wearing half the stuff we packed. I speak from experience because I am profoundly guilty of this.
Bringing 1 pair of jeans/pants will usually suffice, as you can pair them with a couple different tops. It’s a good idea to choose tops that are neutral colors that coordinate with the rest of your wardrobe. You could also bring a few skirts or dresses, 1 pieces of light outerwear, and a couple pairs of comfortable footwear (don’t pack more than 3 shoes). (Tip: always bring a few extra pairs of socks). Wear heavier clothing while traveling to keep your luggage underweight. Also, doing laundry at your destination will help you pack lighter. Don’t worry, many hotels have an on-site laundry facility.
3. Always use a packing list
Seriously, this will be a huge help! I always use one and it makes my life so much easier. Starting with a packing list keeps you organized, and ensures you won’t forget anything important. It helps you decipher the essentials from the “just in case” items. After you’re done packing, double-check the list to ensure you’ve got everything you need. Don’t feel like making your own? To save you time, I’ve created a free travel planning kit that includes a packing checklist! Download it here.
4. Roll your items instead of folding
If you’re constantly frustrated by your suitcase looking big and bulky, try rolling your items instead of folding them. This technique really works, because it maximizes the space in your luggage and keeps your clothes nice and smooth. Another tip is to fold your clothes together in bundles by laying one on the other and folding from the bottom up. Packing cubes are also very useful for saving space in your luggage.
5. Place heavier items at the bottom
Another great way to pack more efficiently is to put heavier items such as shoes and toiletries toward the bottom so that your luggage is easier to roll when traveling.
6. Keep fragile items in your carry on or purse
This includes things like cameras, lenses, iPads and other delicate items. Because they’re fragile, this is my preferred method of storing my electronics. It allows me to keep them near me so I can ensure they travel safely. I don’t put them in my checked luggage because it’s way too easy for something to break while the items are in transit, and it would be more expensive to replace it later on. Also, the thought of putting my DSLR in a checked bag just makes me anxious.
7. Be mindful of airline restrictions
It’s also important to be aware of these guidelines, because you don’t want to be faced with the unfortunate reality that you’ll have to toss your favorite items out before you board the plane. Wondering what you can and can’t bring on a plane? Click here.
8. Weigh your luggage – don’t guess
It’s always a good idea to weigh your bag before leaving. Don’t estimate or leave it to chance. Weigh your luggage on a home scale, or use a portable luggage scale. You can find one at Walmart or Amazon for pretty cheap.
9. Don’t pack heavy items – wear them
Space is a hot commodity so you don’t want to use it all up by packing big, bulky items in your suitcase. Heavy items like sneakers and hoodies can be worn in transit. Personally, I really wearing sneakers because they’re more comfortable to travel in and they protect my feet. I also usually wear hoodies when I’m traveling because they keep me warm in the airport and on the plane.
10. Some additional tips
- Pack the must-haves, not the wants
- Leave the “just in case” items behind, purchase at destination if needed
- Don’t pack super heavy outwear – can be bought later on if necessary
- Always wear comfortable clothing
- Remember to bring a comfortable travel pillow and scarf/sarong that can double as a blanket. I have a gray one that I always take with me on trips. A similar one can be purchased here.
